The driving time to Bwindi forest

The driving time to Bwindi forest is located in south-western Uganda bordering with Rwanda and DR-Congo in the districts of Rubanda, Kisoro, and Kanugu. The Bwindi forest can be easily accessed by both road and air, by road it’s about 580 kilometers from Kamala or from Entebbe international airport while by air it is only about 45 minutes to one hour flight, Bwindi forest is very popular because it is a home to more than half of the world population of mountain gorillas making it the top gorilla tracking destination in the world.

The drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi forest is quite a long drive that takes an almost full day (9 to 10 hours) drive to get to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park which is tiresome but I can assure you the drive is worth it as you will get to enjoy the beautiful attraction sceneries along the way as you drive through different towns and the countryside,

In order to cut the long drive, you will have few stopovers, including at Uganda equator for photography, at fruit shops on the along the roadside, and another stopover in Mbarara city for lunch and after continue the drive to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

The Bwindi forest has four gorilla trekking sectors so for example if you choose to access Bwindi forest via the Kisoro area you will have to either trek in the Rushaga sector or in the Nkuringo sector if you are accessing Bwindi forest via the Kabale area you have to trek in Ruhija sector, while if you accessing it via Kanugu area you will have to trek in Buhoma sector which is also the park headquarters of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

Going to the Bwindi forest using public transport?

some of the budget travelers prefer using public transport because it is much cheaper compared to use a hired car or booking through a tour company. There is a daily bus leaving from Kampala to Kisoro town, Kabale town, and Kihiihi town, the three towns are the last towns as you go to Bwindi forest so from those towns you can easily get a small taxi or Boda Boda (moto bike) to take to the Bwindi forest where gorilla tracking starts from. From the above towns, it will take you about 30 to 45minutes to get to Bwindi forest.

What is the distance-the driving time to Bwindi forest by road to using public transport?

 If one is using public transport to access Bwindi forest for gorilla tracking, it takes longer when one is using public transport because the bus has many stopovers in different towns offloading and picking presages so if you are planning to go for gorilla tracking using public transport, please take note that you will have to consider spending whole day traveling to Bwindi and another full day going back because it takes a minimum of 9-10 hours from Entebbe/Kampala city to get to Bwindi forest by road.

How to access Bwindi forest from Kigali Rwanda?

It is much easier to access Bwindi forest for those who fly to Kigali international airport in Rwanda and want to cross to Bwindi forest in Uganda for gorilla tracking from Kigali, it is only about 3 to 4 hours drive from Kigali airport to Bwindi Forest via cyanika border in Kisoro or via Katuna border in Kabale.

From Kigali to Cyanika border post or Katuna using public transport takes about 2 and a half 3 hours’ drive, this means that it now possible for tourists to fly to Kigali and cross to Uganda for gorilla tracking in Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. There is a daily scheduled domestic flight which flies from Entebbe airport to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, if interested contact us we will help book you in one of the daily flights from Entebbe International Airport to Nyakabende Kisoro Airstrip or to Kihihi Airstrip which is just a one hour drive away from Bwindi forest.
