Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas

From the shadowy days of yesteryear, Uganda has been rising and claiming back its status as a must-see safari destination. What was once titled the “Pearl of Africa” by Winston Churchill is now back in vogue with safari connoisseurs.

Bordered by Tanzania and Kenya, Uganda might be a tiny and landlocked country but it packs a lot of charm into a small area. But what would bring a curious traveler to this tiny Eastern African country?

Mountain Gorilla Trekking!! Mountain gorillas have become an attraction over the years, bringing thousands of travelers into the country to have a moment with the human-like apes. Since Uganda houses a great population of mountain gorillas more than the other only two countries where mountain gorillas are found, it is a great choice for gorilla trekking adventures.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is cheaper than the competing country in Rwanda. A gorilla permit in Uganda costs US$700 per person per trek, but the gorilla permit in Rwanda takes a hefty US$1,500 from your pockets.

Why Uganda’s Gorilla Safaris

There are tremendous reasons to choose gorilla trekking in Uganda and most of the better part is that Uganda offers you more than gorilla safaris.

  1. Only in Uganda where the savanna jungle meets the Albertine rainforest jungle: Meaning you can go gorilla trekking and on a savanna game drive the same day without leaving the country.
  2. Yes, the giant savanna safari destinations in Kenya and Tanzania don’t compare with Uganda but in Uganda, you get to avoid the crowds. A Safari in Uganda is more private, meaning you can drive for hours with just you and the herds of wildlife without meeting another safari vehicle.
  3. Gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is more than half cheaper than that in Rwanda. A gorilla permit in Uganda is US$700 and US$1,500 in Rwanda.
  4. Uganda has more habituated mountain gorilla families than Rwanda. Seeing the mountain gorilla is guaranteed.
