Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists.
Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of no more than eight people, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them.
They are very active creatures and jump from tree to tree which is really interesting and a little difficult to photograph some times, The golden monkey tracking is worth going for while in Volcanoes National Park and if you’re interested in wildlife, this is a rare and delightful experience not to be missed.
To do the Golden Monkey tracking one requires to buy a tracking permit which costs USD100 per person. Unlike it is with the Mountain Gorillas tacking, at the moment there is no limit to the number of tourists who can go for the Golden Monkey trek in a day, hence leaving room for last-minute bookings. This especially makes it easy to add Golden Monkeys to the Mountain Gorilla tracking experience, especially for tourists who only learn about these wonderful creatures on their arrival to the park. Permits can be acquired through us at Kisoro Tours Uganda or at the park offices in Kinigi in the morning before the start of the trek.
To join the tracking you report to the park offices in Kinigi at 7 am to buy the permit, in case you did not book for one with Kisoro Tours Uganda. You then meet the rangers who are to lead the tracking, briefing you and thereafter transfer to the base of Sabinyo Volcano, which is about 15 minutes of drive.
