History of Habituating Chimpanzees in Virunga National Park
In 1987, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) developed an 80 km walking trails inside the Tongo forest and started a two-year process of habituating chimpanzees to the presence of tourists, By 1989 approximately 50 chimpanzees had been habituated after a few month Tracking began three years, which anther important source of tourism revenue to the park and the small community of Tongo apart from the gorillas which have been habituated many years ago,
Despite the prolonged period of conflict, Virunga National Park rangers have protected and monitored Tongo’s chimpanzees, the peace which returned to the Kivus region was short-lived. It wasn’t until 2010 that the FZS team of 40 technical people from the local community was able to re-launch a re-habituation process.
By June 2010 the chimpanzees were once again re-habituated and tourists where began allowed to do chimpanzee tracking in to see them on a regular basis. In April 2012, hostilities erupted yet again, and chimpanzee trekking in DR-Congo
