Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking

After having a heavy breakfast in preparation for a long forest walk searching for the chimpanzees. You may track chimpanzees either in Kyambura Gorge also known as the valley of apes or Karinju Community Forest. Chimps normally stay in groups known as troops, of about 30 – 80 individuals. The large groups consist of smaller, very flexible groups of fewer members, possibly all females, or all males or at times mixed groups.

Later you will be transferred to Bwindi National Park. It is a relaxing drive through Ishasha Game Reserve for the famous tree climbing lions. It is somewhat uncommon for lions to actually climb trees. There are no more than 2 populations in whole world of such lions that do actually climb trees as one of their day after day behavior. One of these populations is found within the Ishasha sector which is found in the south part of the well known Queen Elizabeth National Park. The day will end with an overnight stay at Buhoma Community Rest Camp or a hotel of your choice.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking

We begin the day with a very early heavy breakfast, since gorilla trekking will include a long forest walk. Accompanied by a packed lunch and at least 2 bottles of drinking water, cameras and binoculars. You will be transported to the park headquarters for briefing by the senior park ranger. The fact that gorillas as a species are on the brink of extinction and treks are a highly restricted activity, encountering wild gorillas is considered a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

Penetrate the dense tropical forest with a tropical green canopy until you encounter the mountain gorillas. As their name implies, mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains, at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet. They have thicker fur, and more of it, compared to other great apes. Park officials will allow you to stay in their presence for ample time. The time taken to encounter the gorillas will trekking ranges between an hour and five hours. Then you will return to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 5: Visit conservation projects in Kisoro

Today you can choose to relax or go out and Visit the different community conservation projects in Kisoro). Learn more about projects in which the Batwa pygmies collaborate to start up different conservation projects. As the original dwellers of this ancient jungle of bwindi Forest, the Batwa were known as “The Keepers of the Forest.” The history of these small-statured people is long and rich.

Day 6: Golden Monkeys tracking

You will receive transportation to the Mgahinga National Park headquarters for briefing. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. As its name suggests, it was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests, and it is also an important habitat for the endangered golden monkey. You will then set off for the great hike over the volcanic terrain in search for Golden Monkeys in the bamboo forests.

Mgahinga National Park shares boarders with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo. Listen to their folk tales and songs. End the day with an overnight stay at Mutanda Eco Community Centre or hotel of your choice.

Day 7: End of Safari

You will be transported back to Kampala as you traverse the scenic Kigezi Highlands.
